LOEWE Basket Bag| a timeless beach bag

It seems like summer is synonymous with wicker – or at least to the fashion world. I first saw the LOEWE basket bag in 2018 on Instagram and fell in love. Emma Hill showed us that it could be dressed down for a day at the beach, or paired with a summer blazer. And when I realized how versatile the bag was, I knew I wanted to dive deeper.

LOEWE Basket Bag Review

After travelling in my early 20’s I started to internalize the importance of my purchasing decisions. According to Vox, the fashion industry contributes to 8.1 percent of global greenhouse emissions. It’s a steep price the environment pays for fashion, but the environmental impact is only one side of the story. We saw with Joe Fresh how the lives of those making what we wear are hindered, and for me, the concept of where my clothes came from became an obsession. I try to think beyond the storefront and right to the beginning. How are my clothes created and who makes them? From there I came up with criteria for what I add to my closet:

1) How does it contribute to climate change?
2) Is it ethically sourced?
3) Will it last? What is its cost per wear and do I feel like I can sell it afterward/ give it a second life?
4) Is it versatile enough to wear over and over again?

Most importantly, with every purchase I started to ask myself, do I feel good about this? With this in mind, I started looking into the LOEWE basket bag.

The LOEWE basket bag was sold out last summer so when I saw it re-stocked I was thrilled. It comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. At first, I looked at buying it used. But the price was virtually the same. Actually, with taxes and duties, it would cost MORE to buy it used. Instead, I turned to their website and began educating myself on the product.

About the LOEWE Basket Bag

Their policies talk about fair trade and how sustainability is at their core. Though I couldn’t find specifics on the factories/ how they reduce carbon emissions, making thoughtful fashion is at the root of the brand.

So with everything I learned, I decided this bag was exactly what I was looking for. The rustic feel is perfect for a European stroll or a day at the beach. To me, this bag is timeless. The neutral colouring matches everything (trust me, I’ve tried it). It’s durable, it’s versatile and it supports artisans.

It’s a bag I’ve been using over and over again. And while I haven’t had the opportunity to bring it to a beach, I’ve worn it almost everywhere else. My cousin’s wedding is in Jamaica next April, which will likely be its first beach debut, and I am beyond excited.

I know I have a long way to go, but spending my money on items that are ethically sourced or handmade is a must for me. And I get it, that’s a privileged thing to say – not everyone can spend hundreds on a wicker beach bag – but by reducing how much I buy each year and focusing on selling a few items from my closet every season (giving my items a second life) I can extend my budget and spend more on one item.

As it stands, I absolutely love this bag. It’s a bag I intend to have in my closet for a long time. And you know what? I feel good about my purchase.
